Biology of Norway Rat

Appearance
Norway rats (more commonly known as the Brown rat) weigh up to a whopping 500g when they reach adulthood, with most species growing to be 40 cm long, making it larger than the second most common species of rat in the world, the Black rat. Their fur is mostly of a brown color, with the belly being of a lighter shade, but some members of the species are of a grey hue. Their shaggy fur does not extend to their tails, which can be as long as 21 cm.

Biology
Brown rats can breed at any time of the year, reaching sexual maturity in a matter of just 2 to 4 months. The female cares for her litter alone during the first few days, which averages to around 20 young, and can have up to 5 litters a year, depending on her health and "activity."

Lifecycle
When the young are born, they are cared for by their mother for the first few days, until they are capable of taking care of themselves. They reach sexual maturity in about just five weeks, which coupled with the fact that females can give birth multiple times a year, makes their reproduction rate phenomenal. However, the black rats rarely live to see a full year, since predators and interspecies conflict keep their populations in check. Nevertheless, there have been rare instances of some rats surviving up to three years in the wild.

Habitat
The Norway rat is the most common species of rat in the entire world and is found throughout every single continent (except Antarctica) in the world. It's larger size, and thicker fur even lets it tolerate low temperatures, unlike its rival, the black rat, which prefers to stick to warmer climates. The Norway rat prefers to live in subterranean (underground) conditions, choosing burrows in rural areas or populating sewers in urban settings.

Diet
The Norway rat is an omnivore, which means it always has an abundance of food, no matter the region. While it is known to go for more exotic prey like catching fish or hunting ducks and sparrows, its regular diet consists mainly of cereals and grains. Nevertheless, if push comes to shove, the Norway rat will eat almost anything.

Behavior
The Norway rat prefers to live in large groups in hidden areas, like in a tunnel network of burrows or in large numbers in sewers. Its also been known to practice a form of social hierarchy system in its colony, with the rats at the top having greater access to food and mating partners, while the lower class being the first to bite the dust if food runs short, a fine parable of human society. They are also quite territorial and have been known to get aggressive towards their own kind for food and living space.
